Ridge Scores Again with ’13 Lytton Springs (AG95, $31.95)

Another year and another post on Ridge’s Lytton Springs.  This Zinfandel-based wine is a perennial favorite of mine, but unlike most of my favorites (I’m looking at you L’Aventure), pricing on Ridge wines remains remarkably low for what’s in the bottle.  The Ridge 2013′s have been very well reviewed (the Lytton Springs just received 95 points from Antonio Galloni) and a visit to the stunning mountaintop winery last week confirmed the hype.

As I was driving up to the winery, the GPS said 4 miles and 20 minutes.  I thought it must be a mistake, but sure enough, after winding up the steep mountain road for 20 minutes, I arrived at the tasting room.  The tasting room soars over Silicon Valley and from its perch, you can see Apples new “space ship” headquarters and on a clear day (which it was) San Francisco.  Only the “beware of rattlesnakes” signs detract from the setting.  It really is stunning.

And the wine?  Today, the Geyserville, which I reviewed in June, is the star of the show, but after a a few years in the bottle, I think the Lytton Springs will pass it up.  It’s tight now, but shows the classic Lytton Springs character of background oak, bright cherry flavors, and most importantly, a polish unmatched in Zinfandel.  This is a wine I buy every vintage.

“The 2013 Lytton Springs has really come together over the last year, far exceeding my early expectations. Powerful and explosive in the glass, the 2013 boasts tons of inky blue/purplish fruit, mocha, spices, new leather, lavender and licorice. Readers will have to give the Lytton Springs at least a few years to shed some baby fat, but it is nearly impossible to resist, even at this early stage. Once again, the team at Ridge has produced an absolutely compelling Lytton Springs. The 16% Petite Sirah in the blend adds an unmistakable air of gravitas.”
